one palette three looks: HUDA Beauty Mauve Obsessions

I love all the eye shadow palettes I own, and wanted to do something to push myself to get a bit more experimental with how I do my eye makeup. I'm relatively modest with my eye shadow application, only occasionally playing up the colors when I go out with friends. Now I'm going to try a little harder, and use more of the colors I tend to avoid. I've written about the HUDA Beauty Mauve Obsessions palette in a previous post. I just fell in love with it in Sephora, even though I've always avoided red and pink shades of eye shadow for fear of my eyes looking irritated (as someone with sensitive eyes this is a constant concern). But it's paid off, because these colors are absolutely gorgeous and look phenomenal without making me look like I have pink eye!

This palette has 9 colors; 6 are matte and 3 are shimmery. The shadows have amazing formulation; they are soft, creamy, and so easy to blend. I've never tried any of the shades without primer, but frankly I hate wearing eye shadow without primer anyway. I wear the holy grail of primers, Urban Decay Primer Potion.

This palette is pretty small, which means it's perfect for travelling! I typically don't bring eye shadow when I travel because my palettes are big and I don't want them to shatter. However, I took this with me on my trip to New York, and it fit perfectly in my makeup bag.

I put numbers on the shades of this palette for reference when I describe my application process.

I started with a really basic look, one that I can wear to work. My workplace is fortunately rather laidback, but I don't play up my make up looks and stay really neutral (which honestly you could blame on my laziness in the morning). Luckily, this has some really nice colors that can give you a really nice neutral eye. I was able to give my eyes a little emphasis without being over the top.

  1. After priming, I applied color #8 all over my lid as a base
  2. Then I applied color #5 into the crease and blended away!
  3. Next I applied color #7 onto the crease to layer the colors, and again blended away. I also brought a little down along the top lash line
  4. Then I went back to color #8 to apply again all over the lid, just to brighten the look a bit more.
  5. I finished the eye look up by applying gel eyeliner and mascara
These colors are pretty basic for just an everyday eye, which I like! It made more sense for me to purchase it, because while I love over the top palettes, I really won't get a lot of use out of them. I also wore my trusty Catnip liquid lipstick (which is officially empty! I have worn this color SO MUCH) because I love how the plum color of the lipstick drew out the subtle purple in the eye.

This next look was a lot more fun! I wore it for a night out with friends. It lasted throughout dinner, drinking, and dancing, all the way until making it home. Seriously, this held up SO WELL, it's definitely worth it to wear during a night out. I know it's also pretty reminiscent of my look I linked earlier in this post, but this time I actually paid attention to the steps of how I applied the shadows.

A side note: I thought my hair looked SO GOOD this night. The lighting actually makes it look a bit lighter than usual. I haven't had any coloring, but I guess my hair wanted to bask in the glow too!
  1. After priming, I applied color #3 all over the lid. This rose gold shimmer color is SO intense and beautiful, I adore it. it's perfect to just put on top of the lid and go.
  2. Then I went in with color #4 and applied it to the outer third of my lid.
  3. Then I took color #9 and blended it into the crease. This is the kind of color that terrified me because it's really intense, and right after applying it I felt like maybe I was going too over the top.
  4. So, I took color #5 and blended that on top into the crease to soften the intensity of the burgundy and darken the look slightly.
  5. However, the look was a bit too matte, so I went back in with color #3 and applied that all over the lid again.
  6. Next, I went in with color #7 and smudged it in along the outer top lash line to play up the liner.
  7. Then I applied my trusty gel liner (with a baby wing that I'm actually very proud of) and my very favorite mascara Benefit's They're Real, which has since run out! I'm just burning through favorites in this post.
I wanted to glow to match the shimmery lids, so I applied my Becca highlighter in Moonstone, which I adore. I can't wait to try more shades from the brand. Then I used my Too Faced Queen B liquid lip, because the matte pink just matched the eyes so well, and I wanted the eyes to be a focus for the look.

This look was straight up inspired by Hannah Schroder. I don't ever do dramatic looks like this, and I've never tried a cut crease before, but I'm so thrilled with how it turned out! I was really nervous that it would be too over the top, but I felt so fabulous! I didn't even have plans, I just went out to a bookstore and treated myself to dinner. I also included a close up of the eyes, because I feel like it didn't look super dramatic in all the photos? Which proved to me that these looks are a lot more wearable than I realized.

Okay it looks like one of the falsies was falling off... This was my first time putting some on in a loooong time, so excuse me while I work on getting better at the application process.

I won't be including a tutorial because I followed the shadow application step by step from the video I linked. (Her whole channel makes me want to buy every HUDA Beauty product!) This look is basically a more intensified version of my second look, but it's also a different type of application. I was intimidated by doing a cut crease, but it really wasn't as difficult as I thought!

I finished up again with my same gel liner, and I added a couple false lashes at the edge of my lash to really make the eyes pop. I also went with my Becca highlighter and the Queen B lip, because the color perfectly complimented this palette.

I'm so happy with how these looks turned out! This palette has a lot of versatility to go more simple and natural, or play up all the shimmers. Also, this palette perfectly complimented my eyes. I love my brown eyes, but I feel like they often don't get treated very specially (except of course by Van Morrison). It's nice because basically any color can look good with brown eyes since they're so neutral. However, these pinks and purples looked so great; I literally kept looking at reflections because I just loved how my eyes looked. Obviously, I adore this palette and think it would look amazing with any colored eyes, but it feels special when your brown eyes get to pop.

Here's a bonus pic of me, just your average girl trying to take selfies, when two teenage boys walked down the street attempting to freestyle. It was very bad, and I laughed very loudly. But hey I took like hundreds of photos of myself, so to each their own!
